ARTRO is pleased to present "DUMB TYPE 1984–1997 Toru Koyamada", an exhibition focusing on Toru Koyamada's work during his years with dumb type, from Sep. 26 to Oct. 25, 2026. Events Opening Reception: Sep. 27 (Sun.), 4:00–8:00pm / DJ: toru yamanaka Talk: Oct. 11 (Sun.), 4:00–6:00pm / Guest: Tomoaki Ishihara Closing Event: Oct. 25 (Sun.), 6:00–9:00pm / Live: IVIVIVIV, toru yamanaka ARTROでは、2026年9月26日［土］から10月25日［日］まで、ダムタイプ結成期における小山田徹の活動に焦点を当てた「DUMB TYPE 1984-1997 Toru Koyamada」を開催いたします。 展覧会会期中には以下のイベントを開催いたします。ぜひお越しください。 関連イベント オープニングレセプション：9月27日［日］16:00−20:00　DJ：toru yamanaka トークイベント：10月11日［日］16:00−18:00　ゲスト：石原友明 クロージングイベント：10月25日［日］18:00−21:00　ライブ：IVIVIVIV、toru yamanaka ※イベントの詳細は後日発表となります。 1984年、今から42年前、私たち（私）はワクワクしていた。世界中で、同時に、「パフォーマンス」という声が聞こえ始めたのだ。そして、私たち（私）はその世界の可能性にのめり込んだ。 　辞書をめくりながら「濁音があったほうが記憶に残りやすい」「馬鹿馬鹿しい意味がいい」「物語から離脱したい」「なんの集団かわからないのがいい」「短く言い換えられるのがいい」とかブツブツ言いながら探し出した名前が dumb type だった。それ以来私たち（私）は dumb type の時間を走る事になった。 　その頃のアイデアの共有の仕方は、断片的な言葉や落書きの様な絵、スケッチのような音源、映画のピックアップなどをそれぞれが脈絡なく提示し合い、大きなテーブルの上にランダムに並べて組み合わせを考えたりしながら、少しづつパフォーマンスを作っていた。私は主に落書きの様な絵で示していた。描いて描いて描きまくっていた。それは舞台装置であったり、シーンのイメージであったり、興味深いディテールであったり、自然の現象であったり。そしていつの間にか他のメンバーが出した様々な要素と結びついて、パフォーマンスへとなっていったのだ。 　今回の展覧会で提示する様々な図面やドローイングは、長らく開かずの段ボールにしまわれていたものである。開いてみるとあの頃の思考の流れがよくわかる。そして、何と何が結びついてあのシーンが出来上がったのかがみてとれる。若気の至りでとても恥ずかしいのだが、一度皆様と共有してみようと思う。42年の時間がこれからの未来につながるといいのだけれど。 　新作のドローイングは40年前の自分に戻って描いてみるという試みである。私自身がタイムマシンに乗ってあの頃に戻ってあの頃の空気を感じながら描いてみた。青臭いロマンティシズムはご容赦ください。 小山田徹 In 1984, forty-two years ago, we (I) were excited. All around the world, at the same time, we began to hear the word “performance.” And we (I) threw ourselves into the possibilities of that world. Flipping through dictionaries, we muttered things like, “A voiced sound would be easier to remember,” “It should mean something ridiculous,” “We want to get away from narrative,” “It should be hard to tell what kind of group we are,” and “It should be easy to shorten.” The name we found was dumb type. From then on, we (I) began running through the time of dumb type. Back then, this was how we shared ideas: each of us would present fragments of words, drawings like doodles, sound sketches, memorable scenes from films, and other things, with little apparent connection between them. We would spread them randomly across a large table, try out different combinations, and little by little a performance would begin to take shape. I mainly showed my ideas through drawings that were more like doodles. I drew and drew and just kept drawing. They might depict stage sets, images of scenes, intriguing details, or natural phenomena. And somehow, they would connect with all sorts of elements brought in by the other members and turn into a performance. The various plans and drawings presented in this exhibition were packed away for years in unopened cardboard boxes. When I opened the boxes, I could clearly see the flow of my thinking at the time. I could also see what had connected with what to create those scenes. They are quite embarrassing to me now, very much the products of my younger days, but I thought I would take this opportunity to share them with you. I hope these forty-two years might connect with the future ahead. The new drawings are an attempt to go back to the person I was forty years ago and draw from there. I got into a time machine, went back to those days, and drew while feeling the air of those days again. Please forgive this bit of youthful romanticism. Koyamada Toru
